You've submitted your resume: Now what?

You’ve submitted your resume, just as the posting or ad said to do but you don’t hear anything. What do you do??

You FOLLOW UP. That’s right, you need to contact the Human Resources department or even the hiring manager to make sure they got your resume and to ask for the interview. (This is no time to be shy. You have to ask for the close.)

But what about those ads or postings that don’t tell you the name of the person to follow up with? You will have to do some investigating to get the right person’s name. Here are some tried and true tips to help you get to the right person.

  • Use linked in. (By now, you should have established your profile and connected with as many people as possible.) Do a search by company name and see who you come up with. Are they one of your connections? If so, email them directly and follow up with a phone cal. More likely, you will have to search someone in your network who knows them or approach them directly and ask to link with them. It’s better if someone in your network knows them so they can provide an introduction.
  • Network with everyone you know to see if they know someone at that organization. Ask them for a contact name, or even better, to make an introduction for you.
  • Try using Hoovers (www.hoovers.com) to locate the contact name. Then, follow up.
  • Call the company directly and ask the receptionist (if they have one) for the right contact name. If you are friendly, they may very well help you.
  • Finally, the company website can also tell you the contact’s name.

Be sure to check back in with Linked In to learn as much as you can about the person before you contact them. The more information you have, the more successful the call.
