Job fairs are a great opportunity to browse the companies that are hiring and meet the hiring managers themselves. However, in today’s job market, you really need to stand out in order to make an impression at a job fair. You need to be thoroughly prepared:
- Dress the part. Plan on wearing a suit. Other outfits can be appropriate, however, there are some things to avoid. Ladies should avoid showing too much skin or looking too casual; guys should avoid wearing sneakers or looking scruffy.
- Bring your important documents in a portfolio or briefcase. Things to include in your document holder: resumes (multiple versions if there are different types of companies at the job fair), business cards, letters of recommendation, portfolio items and a notepad. This way when a hiring manager hands you brochures, a business card or flyers, you can professionally stash them away instead of shoving them in your pocket.
- Do your research. Look up each company beforehand to get an idea of what they do. Understand their mission and how you would fit into that company. You need to show the hiring manager what your selling points are and why they should hire you (as opposed to the thousands of others at the fair).
- Make yourself memorable. Don’t just drop by each booth and leave a resume — that’s about as ineffective as sending your resume through e-mail from home. You need to make yourself stand out in the hiring manager’s mind. Be friendly and happy; shake their hand firmly when you meet them; state your name and express gratitude for being able to meet with them. All of these can make you stand out among others who may not take that much time with each hiring manager.
- Ask questions. This is your time to find out what they’re looking for and when they will fill the position. Ask when and how you should follow-up with them (following up is something most job seekers forget to do, so that alone will set you apart). Inquiring about the position, the company, etc. is a great way to show you’re interested.
- Follow-up. One day after the fair, send the hiring manager(s) a quick e-mail thanking them for the opportunity to meet. Make it easy for them to get ahold of you — give them your contact information and let them know your interest again.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface.
